Hornet Identification

Hornets are aggressive flying insects akin to yellow jackets. Growing between 1 to 1.5 inches long, hornets have a black upper body, yellow or white face, and a black and yellow lower body. They choose to make their nests in small crevices like soffits and eaves as well as house siding and tree bark. If you see a hornet darting in and out of one of these areas, it’s fair to assume there is a nest there, even if you can’t see it.

Unlike other similar insects, hornets go on the offensive and won’t hesitate to sting a perceived threat. Their stringers are quite large, and resulting stings are painful with redness and swelling. Because hornets are so aggressive and have such a painful stinger, it’s also good to take action before too many start to take over your home.
