Earwigs

Earwig Identification

Earwigs are very strange-looking insects. Reddish and brown in color, they have slender bodies and can grow to about 1 inch in length. Many find their appearances startling, as they have distinct appendages extruding from the lower abdomen. Females have forceps while males have hooked pincers. However, these pests generally do not harm humans they encounter.

Active at night, these insects are quite fast and scurry around. They prefer dark, moist, cooler areas to hide around, and often come in clusters due to pheromones. It’s been said that earwigs burrow into ears at night, but this is a myth.
